Smilepod and Invisalign

Statistics show that 75% of adults suffer from some form of dental phobia or anxiety from that looming dental appointment written in red on the calendar.
If your one of these people and live in the UK then check out Smilepod.
They are a walk in dental hygienist with 24 hour online booking. They pride themselves on taking the anxiety out of a dental appointments and putting your tooth demons to rest.
I have major dentist phobia, up until a few years ago I had avoided the dentist for six years!

The four walk-in Smilepods are in London and located at Bank, Covent Garden, Soho and Canary
Wharf and feel more like a trendy spa rather than a sterile dentist.
Services and prices are listed on the walls so there are no nasty shocks at the end of the appointment.
Consultations for most treatments are also free. Their website is very informative and also breaks down the costs and treatments to put your mind at rest.

I went to Smilepod for teeth whitening but while there I noticed that they also offer Invisalign teeth straightening, something I have been interested in for some time.
I am very conscious of my smile as my teeth are quite pointed. When I look at a photograph of myself smiling I see:-

I know that vampires are popular these days but that hasn't alleviated my insecurities.
Here is a close up of my spiky nashers (before whitening). Pretty gross huh!

I will be keeping you updated on my Invisalign Journey on the blog and also on our second channel PixiwooMadness
If you would like to hear about my teeth whitening experiences watch this video. If you are interested in trying teeth whitening at the Smilepod studios check out Buyapowa

  2. I think your teeth look perfectly fine in the before picture :) Don't require whitening or straightening! But I know how it is to get a bit self conscious and if you can make subtle changes without any pain or damage to the health of your teeth then that's great!

  6. Hi, Im glad your going to keep us updated on the blog.

I've had braces when I was 11/12 yrs old but back then the retainers were most certainly not as comfortable or 'invisible' looking to the eye. It had a metal wire going across and a mould like thing similar to the top part of the mouth (the pinky part). It was not soft but kinda hard so being 11/12 yrs old I hardly used to wear it. I only used to wear it before my dental appointment and slowly I stopped wearing it at all!

Thats when the gaps started to form on the top row..

Im 24 now and really want the gaps filled in but the price keeps me away and who to go to:o(

***If you dont mind me asking how much are you paying?****
    Smilepod sounds good.

    1. Hi,

Just to let you know we offer payment plans at Smilepod which start from £70 per month. We'd always recommend popping in for a free consultation just to see if you need a treatment and if it is suitable for you. Anyway do feel free to come along and see us for a chat.

      Thanks

    2. We offer payment plans from £70 per month but if you are interested in Invisalign the best action is to pop into a studio and talk to one of the dentists. They can then see if you are suitable for treatment and if we could help you. We have studios across London so do feel free to just pop in for an informal chat if you would like.

      Thanks

      Sue

  7. I think your teeth are fine, I thought you didn't believe in having to change yourself to fit into an ideal? They're healthy and in great condition, I honestly can't see anything wrong with them at all.

    1. Who said I am changing myself to fit in with an ideal? I have absolutely no problem with making the best of ones self. I do have a problem with the unrealistic ideals that we are subjected to via the medias obsession with photoshop but it's really not that same as having my teeth straightened because I don't like my smile.

  9. The only way I could figure out how to do this I tried to Facebook but it wouldn't allow me to send the msg.
Hi, I think this may be the most random email that you read today.
    So here goes...
A little while ago I was msging my friend Emma Rix,  and noticed on her wall pictures of you and your wedding.  Thought  why do i feel like I have seen this person or met her before. So I messaged Emma going who is Nicola have a met her in Norwich when Andrew and I have been visiting and she said, I don't think so we go way back but I don't think you have met her. Anyways to cut a long sorry short I put 2 and 2 together and realized that you NIC from pixiwoo. Who I just happen to be a really big fan of you and your sister. I think your amazing makeup artist. I am a hairdresser and makeup artist as well. Anyway i had to msg you because what a small world. My husband has been friend with Tanya and Emma forever! I met them about 6 years ago now and we have been great friends ever since. His parents still live in the uk so we go up once a year to visit.  I will be in Norwich in October for a wedding (Tristans) i dont know if you know him, and would love to meet up with you if your up for it. I will probably out shopping at least once or twice with Tanya. Haha maybe you would join us.
Anyway I will let you go. I do hope to hear back from you and hopefully this wasn't your weirdest email yet lol

  10. Pretty sure a walk in dental hygienist is against GDC regualtions, Patients can only see a hygieneist after referal from a dentist. I wonder how they get around this.

Invisalign is great for minor corrections, I hope your happy with the results :D

  11. I actually think your teeth looked quite healthy in your before picture. Actually my dentist told me that teeth are never healthy if they're too white. If you can detect a little bit of yellow, more of an eggshellwhite then they're more healthy and more solid. I'm german so I don't know all the specific words in english right now :P

  12. I'm on my last set of Invasalign right now (it's been 6 months) and the results really are fantastic. It's great that you can take them out if you need to for events or whatever other reason. They hurt a bit at first but nothing that a couple of mild pain relievers can't fix! The only negative about them is that they are really restrictive for eating/drinking. It's kind of a pain to have to take out the aligners if you're out but it's totally worth it and way better than the traditional braces! Hope your experience is good :)

    1. Hi Bee,
I don't love the shape of my teeth and have always been unhappy with them.
Unfortunately, all the people that say they like my teeth won't make any difference to me because they are my teeth and my feelings. Not sure if that actually makes sense, I know what I am trying to say :)

    2. good for you Sam! what you think/feel about yourself is what matters, not what everyone else is saying (negative or positive) at the end of the day youre the one who has to be comfortable with who you are! so I say go for it if you feel its going to make you feel better about your smile- its not like youre going heidi montag & getting 20 plastic surgery proceeders done! its teeth straightening!!! DO IT! :)

  15. I'm getting Invisalign soon, too! I'm excited while waiting for my trays to come in. And btw, they can shave down your pointy teeth for you. My orthodontist shaved down some teeth that were pointy and my tooth that had a chip in it, you can't tell it's had a chip now. :)

  16. I seriously always loved your teeth! hate mine though, they are too big,... i look like a rabbit

  20. When you said in the video that your teeth looked like Christopher Walken's in Sleepy Hollow I literally laughed out loud! You're totally wrong of course, but it was really funny. Then I check the blog and you've got a picture...hilarious! But utterly wrong. You're lovely!

  21. Hi Sam,
I regularly read your blog and have picked up loads of tips from you and your sister, you are both very talented makeup artists.
I am actually a Specialist Orthodontist, I do a lot of invisalign as well as conventional braces, I would advise you to make sure that the person treating you is a specialist orthodontist so that you get the best possible result aesthetically and functionally. Invisalign is a great way to straighten teeth, but it isn't suited to everyone and you need a practitioner who has had proper training in orthodontics, not just a weekend course. All the best

  22. Hi Sam,
Congratulations on starting your invisalign treatment. I would just like to offer a word to the wise concerning your treatment. I am a specialist orthodontist, meaning that I have done an additional 3 years of training after becoming a dentist to become a specialist. My advice to you would be to make sure that the person who will be planning your treatment is an orthodontist so that you get the best result in terms of aesthetics and function. I'm definitely not saying that a dentist cannot do the job, but it's the difference between the way you put make up on and the way I would do it....I can do it but definately not to the standard you are able to do it. I wish you the best of luck and look forward to your updates

    1. Invisalign do all the planning. The impressions are sent off to the U.S where the invisalign team plan the best possible outcome for your teeth, so really it has nothing to do with the dentist because they just fit them :)

  23. That is one scary picture...I mean the Christopher Walken one that is, not yours. I was afraid to sleep in the dark for two days because of that movie :-) (more having to do with the Iron Madden scene than "headless" himself). I mentioned you and one of your tutorials in a blog post. I just started so there's only a little bit up there...but you and your sister have definitely been an inspiration for me...make up is so much more fun now that I've learned how to do it..

  24. I've actually had an invisalign consultation this week myself and am going in monday for the mould thing to be made of my teeth. Like you, my teeth aren't actually that bad but they bother me so much, my friends keep telling me I'm mental and was doubting my decision, then I saw this post and its totally reaffirmed my decision to go ahead so thanks for the video, looking forward to your updates!

  25. Hi Sam, good luck with it. I'll be interested to see how you get on as I've been considering my options too. I went to see a dentist in Lewisham and he recommended Clearstep over Invisalign as there are sometimes administrative problems with Invisalign being based in the US. However, he did appear to suggest part of his partiality towards Clearstep was possibly due to a closer relationship with them(possibly based on commission!). They're similar prices though, ranging from about £2,000 for just minor correction, like the top set of teeth, to about £2,800 for both sets. He didn't give me many other options though and I'm not sure whether either would be the right choice as my problem has always been overcrowding - I've had 4teeth out but there's still a problem as I'm quite petite. My two front teeth are also too long and are starting to curve inwards slightly which I'm not sure retainer-style braces will correct.
Time to look for some other orthodontists in London I think, thanks for the tip-off about SmilePod, I'll be looking them up.
As for the whitening, unfortunately that BuyaPowa is closed now but do you happen to know how Tanya and Jim are getting on with their home whitening kits?
Looking forward to following your journey ladies - big fan of your YouTube channel :)

  26. Today is actually my last day of wearing my invisaligners (tomorrow I am having the buttons all removed and permanent retainers put in as well as having them whitened so v excited!) and I do have to say it was the best investment I made. I understand what it's like to always be so self conscious about your teeth and can honestly vouch for how much this treatment has made me a more confident and smiley person.

  27. I started my Invisalign Journey 2 weeks ago. I just started my second trays. It hasn't been near as bad as braces, which I had for 3 years in jr high. But there are a few things they don't tell you. You have to brush your teeth after every meal or snack because you are more susceptible to cavaties with the trays on all day. Also some of the plastic can be rough on your gums, but I just too a nail file to the sides and it helped. The hardest part for me has been trying to get them in and out of my mouth without looking like a fool. They're very tight the first few days and I broke several nails trying to get them out :)

  28. Does the whitening hurt your gums? I read a lot of people have issues with their gums after whitening (as well as it thinning out the teeth).

  29. Good for you Sam!
I've been self conscious about my teeth ever since I was a teenager.
I'm lucky enough to have relatively straight teeth, but they've always been noticeably yellow (no matter how much I brushed!) About 2 years ago I got the exact same whitening treatment that you showed in your video! I wasn't after the hollywood super white teeth look, I just didn't want my teeth to be yellow. It worked much quicker than the dentist said that it would so I stopped using it early and had heaps of product left to just do maintenance treatments every six months or so.
The only problem that I had was that it made my teeth VERY sensitive - to the extent where breathing out of my mouth was agonizing because AIR would touch my teeth! but this passed after giving it a break for a couple of days and I've had no lasting ill effects to my teeth. I'm now very confident rocking my bright red lipstick, very happy with the results and would recommend it to anyone. Good luck Sam!
