Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

This best-selling foundation has become very popular with make-up artists the world over.
What's great about it?  So easy is it to apply that you could literally throw this foundation on and it would look beautiful.  It blends in quickly to provide instant luminosity and radiance without any unwanted residue (it is oil-free). It looks natural on the skin, evening out skin tone and providing an all over polished look and a perfected base for applying make-up. It's texture is velvety, smooth and dare I say, it feels expensive.
The foundation has a medium buildable coverage that easily covers dark circles, uneven skin tones and blemishes but it isn't at all obvious and yet manages to maintain a naturally flawless and highly effective finish. It also feels totally weightless on the skin.
I would say that it is more suited to normal/ dry or combination skin rather than oily.

Negatives - It is packaged in a heavy glass bottle, so not great for transporting in a kit, It carries the hefty price tag on £34, which makes this foundation as expensive as gold dust!

The foundation is available in 15 shades from Selfridges.

What foundation do you love and why?

  1. This sounds sooo nice! I know they are two different foundations, but in your personal opinion which do you prefer out of this and the Chanel Aqua Vitalumiere because I was going to buy the Chanel but now i'm not sure... Thanks! x

  2. I REALLY want to try this stuff but I am still in love with Bourjois Healthy Mix - the price really swings it for me, especially for every day use. I do like to have some more expensive ones to use as a treat for a special occasion though (as sad as that might sound!) and I think this could be the next expensive one I try.

  3. I have a sample of this which I am dying to try out properly. At the moment I use Guerlain Lingerie De Peau (or Bourjois Healthy Mix depending on my mood) with a bit of Estee Lauder Double wear over my problem areas. My face is a hotch potch!

  4. Estee Lauder Double Wear is my HG and for me there is no other Foundation that is that good. Medium (but if needed buildable) coverage, stays on for 24 hours (really, i tried it!!) without fading or becoming cakey, covers blemishes and even out the skintone. With the right application (brush or beautyblender needed, it's a bit tricky with fingers)it looks quite natural. I really love it!
I'm from Germany and unfortunately we only have it in a few shades while in the USA they have tones of shades for this foundation. Because i am so pale, I have to order mine always from the USA, so sad that there is such a difference.

    1. Hi Tasha,
I live in Portugal and have the same problem. Could you please tell me which US site you order American products from and how much are the delivery costs for EU countries. If the costs are not too high I could let them be sent here or to a family member's address in Holland. I think the Dutch customs might be easier regarding import taxes. Do you pay import tax in Germany?

  5. I'm desperate to try this seeing as it's such a cult product, but there is no selfridges near me and I'm reluctant to order online without comparing shades in person. My fave foundation is Nars sheer glow or Mac F+B. I have just ordered the Illamsqua skin base thanks to you! And found their shade comparison chart amazing, in every one I compared, nars, mac, ysl I turned out to be shade sb4, so I trust it completely. I can't wait for it to arrive and will be using it with my new Real Techniques buffing brush :)

  6. I don't really agree that this foundation is a 'throw on and go' kind of product. It is possibly one of the hardest foundations to work with in my opinion?! It sheers out way too much. But I do love it because it gives a gorgeous dewyness to the skin and it photographs beautifully.
At the moment my favourite foundation is a toss up between Illamasqua Skin Base and Jemma Kidd Light As Air. x

  7. I had it and to be honest - I didn't like him. On my combination skin it didn't last for more than 2-3 hours, didn't cover a lot and my shin was soooo shiny, even if I applied mattifying cream.
I love Clarins Everlasting and new Lancome - Teint Idole Ultra 24 Foundation.

  8. Illamasqua Skin Base is my number one foundation. Can't really say anything negative about it, though it's a bit expensive to order it through Illamasquas website. Someone should really start to sell Illamasqua here in Finland. In mineral foundations, Meow Cosmetics mineral foundation is the best. Perfect to wear, stays on, let's the skin breath and is really kind to skin. And the shades that Meow has... I think they have over 80 shades, so everyone will find theirs. I'm a sleek Siamese. :D Love it!

  13. My favourites are MAC Face and Body, Healthy Mix and Double Wear light. A good mix. I don't have a favourite out of the 3 as it depends on what I need. I would like it to be Face and Body everyday, but my skin isn't always looking brilliant every day to pull it off.
Think I'll give Armani a miss, it's too expensive. x

  15. I really like the channel products and that is thanks to you ladies! Its so dry here in the winter and i find they give me a nice dewy finish... However Holt Renfrew just picked up the armani line and I think i might just have to splurge for my wedding make up!

  19. i heard a lot about it. definitely - will try it. Now i'm using mac, before it i had helena rubinstein - it was pretty good, nothing is wrong with it but mac is better for me. I don't have any problems with skin, i have normal skin type and i use foundations just for making my skintone more natural and healthy.
Now i'm looking for good consiler/highlighter that will make my skin radiant, with a light coverage. Any suggestions?

  22. i love the chanel vitalumiere aqua foundation. it is so easy to apply and very smooth. bought illamasqua skin base, it was hard to get it here in germany. but it makes my face look cakey. i don't know why. i used it with laura mercier primer, without primer, smallest amount, used sam's stipling brush. i'm disappointed. maybe i try daniel sandler if i can get here in germany. or take a look at the armani. :D

  23. I got this foundation for Christmas, firstly I was quite disappointed as I felt it didn't give me as much coverage as I had hoped...But as I gave it another try I really love it...It stays on the face, I think more than Pro Lumiére (which I also love, don't get why it was discontinued), the coverage is absolutely fine, and it gives skin velvety look...also smells lovely and it is very easy to apply. The foundation is really expensive but I recommend it...I have really pale skin and number 4 fits perfectly...Thanks for the review pixiwoo :)

  27. I bought it once a few years ago and as soon as I got home, I accidentally drop it on my bathroom floor and it shattered. I was so upset I cried! Then the next day I went back and bought another one, so basically it cost me nearly $120... But I have to say, it is one of the best foundations I have ever used.

  28. Hi girls! I think I have watched pretty much all of your videos, but I have never seen a foundation review tutorial... Don't know if you have ever done any foundation reviews or something similiar, but could you maybe do one? Pick your favorite foundations, some you don't like and some that are quite okay, and just make a foundation review tutorial? That would have been awesome! Love you guys, I have really learned so much from you :-)

  29. HOLY GRAIL FOUNDATION!! this is hands down one of the best foundations ever made i love everything about it except for the hefty price tag..lol the closest dupe i have found so far is the face atelier foundation which is also AMAZING it comes in so many shades and they have zero +(add to any foundation to deepen) zero-(add to any foundation to darken) and heat (add to any foundation to add more warmth) you can match anyone and they have great colors even for the darkest skin tones the product is silicone based so you don't need a primer and it is good for most skin types as it hydrates dry skin and absorbs oil on oily skin it also doesn't settle into pores and lines as it floats on top of the skin giving an airbrushed finish.
