After the immense success of the first Urban Decay NAKED make-up palette the second one was going to have a LOT to live up to. The first NAKED palette made such a name for itself and featured in an abundance of YouTube videos and blog posts all over the world with pretty much everyone raving about it. With the gorgeous selection of quality shadows, it was hard not to.
So finally... the NAKED2 palette, I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and assessing it very critically against the well-established first palette. Here are the results.
So finally... the NAKED2 palette, I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and assessing it very critically against the well-established first palette. Here are the results.
On first appearance, the palettes have much in common, a rectangular case with a series of rectangular shadows lined up inside, both printed with NAKED on the front with bold lettering. However there are a number of key differences, and if we are just talking about packaging then the NAKED2 has to win. The case for the NAKED2 is much more durable, the shadows come in a metal case that locks securely shut, whereas the original is a velvet case that closes loosely together, thus making the new palette much more handbag friendly and protected. If i'm going to nitpick, the velvet on the first palette also attracts fluff, so ultimately the NAKED2 has better packaging for those with mild OCD (like myself).
Down to the nitty gritty - the eyeshadows! Ultimately, I have come to the decision that you just cannot chose between the palettes, they simply compliment each other perfectly and although it may seem slightly greedy to have both, the new palette has been designed as a follow up palette to the first but I would say it has more peachy tones.
Both have colours that I would certainly buy separately, while some perhaps I would not, but as complete sets I love them both equally and both have colours that I use more than other sets. If you are looking to get one over the other, you just have to decide how many colours from each you would wear the most and go with the one that has the most wearable colours for you.

To remind ourselves of the first palette...
Left to right: Virgin, Sin, Naked, Sidecar, Buck, Half Baked, Smog, Darkhorse, Toasted, Hustle, Creep and Gunmetal
This palette is undoubtedly brilliant and has such a cult following because of its quality and fantastic colour selection. On a side note, I do find these shadows have more fallout than many of my other favourite brands.
The colours that I personally use and would consider purchasing separately are Naked, Sidecar, Darkhorse, Toasted and Gunmetal. Unlike the NAKED2 this palette has two matte brown colours (Naked and Buck) which are brilliant for definition, there is also the gorgeously glittery Sidecar and the deep and dark glitters of Creep and Gunmetal. It is different to the NAKED2 in this respect, but the NAKED2 has some essential colours that are not found in this palette...
Left to right: Foxy, Half Baked, Bootycall, Chopper, Tease, Snakebite, Suspect, Pistol, Verve, YDK, Busted and Blackout
Although this palette doesn't feature matte browns, there is the mink colour of tease that is very pretty and soft to contour with, The neutral matte shadow Foxy, which is wonderful as a base colour, and the deeply pigmented matte black named blackout, which is amazing for quickly defining the eyes and creating a rich intensity. Neither these colours, or anything similar, feature in the original palette.
There is also the introduction of the taupe colour Pistol which is a much welcomed colour for me. The only cross over is Half Baked which makes an appearance in both palettes, although not one of my personal favourites, I presume it is in here again due to it being very popular and it is great on bronzed skin. This palette also sees the addition of five brand new eyeshadows - Booty Call, Busted, Pistol, Snake Bite and Tease.
Finally, just to talk of the overall quality of the shadows, as you may already know since we feature UD shadows quite a bit, the quality is fantastic, the payoff is rich, they are long lasting, they blend like a dream and the colour selections are right up my street but as I mentioned earlier, the fallout may be a turn off for some. Also, they are very shimmery indeed so certainly would be a disappointment for the person that prefers a matte texture
Personally, I can't pick a favourite of the two (apart from the packaging) and love having both, they offer me variety and have their uses in different ways. At £36 a pop, I think they are great value for 12 outstanding shadows in each palette. I'm pretty sure the NAKED2 will create just as much of a buzz and have the same amount of success as the first.
What do you guys think, do you have a favourite and why?
I decided against purchasing the NP2 as I dont show enough love to the first palette! For once I am being sensible and not buying something because its been hyped up so much! :-) x
ReplyDeleteI own the Urban Decay Naked palette original, and I love it since the first time I came into my hands, and it took me long time to be able to have it, it was sold out for long time, but I am not sure if it´s really worth it to get the Urban Decay Naked 2 palette, it looks amazing but it looks very similar to the original on, thanks for sharing i will think about it!
ReplyDeletePerfect review on both, really good read. :o) x
ReplyDeleteI cant wait to get the Naked 2 palette. :))) It looks really nice. I loved the first one. If i get both I will probaby have all the eyeshadows I need to do anything :D I only wish that there were more matte colours...
ReplyDeleteI love it!
ReplyDeleteI was in 2 minds about getting it but I love the first one so the second is a must really. Anything neutral and it's mine! Great post xx
ReplyDeletei have the first palette and thought that i wasn't going to be purchasing the naked 2 but after seeing your swatches i think i just might. i thought that they would be too similar, but you're right about them complementing each other rather than competing with each other.
ReplyDeletexoxo,

It's my dream to have naked 2 Palette !
ReplyDeleteI adore my original Naked Palette and have used it almost every day since I bought it in July, and it is still going strong 6 months later. I'd love to own both but I can't really justify it.
ReplyDeleteOddly I MUCH prefer the original packaging. It just looks so much nicer, and I think the new one looks like a primary school kid's pencil case that you buy for £3 in the local WHSmiths. I've never had an issue with durability with the original, mine still looks beautiful, it never opens accidently.
I think the Naked 1 is better for warmer tones, which makes it more suitable for me. But I need that gorgeous Naked 2 packaging!! I'm confused. :\

I want them both :D
ReplyDeletei dont have a favourite, i love them both and indeed own them both, i just cant choose :S

I'm definitely going to purchase this palette. I love UD, especially for a couple of my clients who are vegan and vegetarian respectively.
ReplyDeleteI found the best way to deal with fall-out from UD and other shadows of a similar ilk is to do the eyes before the base.
Wish there were more mattes, as others have said.
I have both & honestly I like both of them! Almost looks the same in colors but can't go wrong having both of them. Xo
ReplyDeleteI have the original Naked palette and seeing the colours in Naked 2, I think they would compliment and complete the collection, when I am in search of colors such as Suspect, Pistol and YDK. :) It's in my wishlist but nothing too urgent to buy it right this moment.
ReplyDeleteAwesome post on it! Will definitely makes me consider getting one for myself and for gifts :)
i love them both too...totally worth it to get both in my opinion ;)
ReplyDeleteI have both and I too LOVE both. However, I am noticing that I am wearing Naked 2 colors more during the day and Naked (Orginal) at night. The cooler tones in Naked 2 are more complimentary, for me, for day wear. I am sure to wear both at either time, I just tend to reach for one over the other when it comes to day or evening wear.
ReplyDeleteI have the first one but as soon as i can buy in Spain the second i will, i think is one of my must have ever.

Definetly the original one.It has mostly sparkling and shimmering shades, which are perfect for the nude make up.Matte shades for nude are not that good.Whenever I do nude make up for my clients I always here-please,add more glitter I can't see myself))))I will buy Nakes 2 for sure, but still will use the priginal palette
ReplyDeleteI have the original, but cannot wait to get my hands on the Naked 2! If you love neutrals and experimenting with them, it is a must :D! x
ReplyDeletethe best review on these yet, and I'm still loving the first one more
ReplyDeleteI love both! Although I'm more comfortable using the first one, I find myself gravitating towards the Naked2 during the winter. The colors are a bit cooler toned and easier to wear when you're not tanned.
ReplyDeleteI own both palettes now, but if I didn't, I'd buy the second one. I'm drawn to more of the colours in it than I am the first.
ReplyDeleteI have the first Naked palette, but as much as I love the thought of it, if there is one thing i do not need anymore of - it's neutral/nude eyeshadows.. haha, love the review though. x
ReplyDeleteI prefer the second one. But sincerely I don't need any of them.
ReplyDeleteThe Life After
I have been thinking about getting the Naked pallet for a while but now that they have brought out another one, I can't decide which one to get! Thank you for the review, I think I would prefer the Naked 2 Pallet :)

I don't own a naked palette but this makes me want to own both!
ReplyDeleteI was so Happy to read your review (Sam?). I feel the exact same way...both Naked palettes are brilliant, the packaging on Naked2 is much better But I love them equally. I find Naked2 to have more cooler tones than the first palette particularly from the center moving to the right. I do find the crossover color of half baked more than a little annoying (don't love that color) but that is really my only complaint. Can't wait to see you lovely Pixiwoo ladies do some tutorials with these palettes!
ReplyDeleteI have the naked1 palette, so I wouldnt be bying naked2, though I like it very much.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the detailed review. I'd love more info on whether shades you review are cool or warm...seems like #1 would be great for a warm gal and #2 better for the cool shades? Keep up the fascinating videos, too! I'd love to see more natural looks: Demi Moore, Rachel Weisz, Ali Larter type looks, too. The light hand is a bit mystifying to me.
ReplyDeleteI just purchased the first Naked palette. I love it! I have gotten many compliments and have owned it for less than a week. I will be buying Naked2 next week! I am very excited. :)
ReplyDeleteHere are some cheap alternatives from NYX:
