A piece of Chanel history.

Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel (19 August 1883 – 10 January 1971)
Quite a few years ago while working for Chanel I had the great privilege of being invited to visit the apartment of Gabrielle Chanel.
Located above the Chanel boutique at 31 Rue Cambon, Although she lived at the Ritz she kept this apartment "as a place to house her own clothes and host dinner parties"
Many influences from the Chanel collections can be seen inside the apartment. For example, a small birdcage in her sitting room was the inspiration behind the 1992 Chanel commercial with Vanessa Paradis. Many Chanel ads have been shot here including the Keira Knightly 'Coco Mademoiselle' commercial and the Shalom Harlow 'Coco' fragrance campaign (below)

Click here for Vogue's tour of the apartment.

  1. Oh I would die to see her apt. It is really breathtaking. There are so many things to look at in every room. What did you love the most? What caught you by surprise?

  2. I think it was all the ornaments that have been used as inspiration for the collections...actually scrap that...it was her glasses and fan still on her desk where she left them. They havent been moved since her death. Amazing.

  4. Hi Lizz
Nah. Im glad I did those things but kids are so much more exciting than anything I ever did before.
Working for Chanel meant the I had to work in Harvey Nics and they have cockroaches in the staff areas. I hated that place.

  6. Sam, you're so incredibly lucky. Also, thank you so much for posting that video, I really enjoyed that.

One thing I don't understand - what do you mean by "working at Chanel"? I assumed it was a makeup counter but I can't see many makeup salespeople being invited to such a prestigious place.

  7. Hey Janett,
I worked in the Chanel Colour Studio in Harvey Nics it was a new concept for Chanel and they stole about 14 MUAs away from their previous jobs (MAC Pro Team) Then they sent us to Paris for intensive training in the Chanel products and company. We were amazingly lucky. I also went with 2 really close friends (also MUAs) So it was even more amazing. x

  9. Fantastic post - so glad you linked it on Twitter today! Interestingly, I had just been on Amazon to order the DVD Coco before Chanel and then I went on Twitter. Lovely coincidence :)

  10. Thank you for sharing these photos! Not long ago, I watched a short video "tour" of this apartment. It is truly gorgeous! Oh, and Coco EDP is my most favorite perfume! I adore old adverts for Coco and No. 5. Classic!
